So, "Copa na Copa," takes a look at the Copacabana in a different light. Rather than seeing it as a tourist mecca, these pictures present one of the most traditional neighborhoods of the city (its population is 30% elderly). My pictures show the beach in an ironic and amusing way, portraying its beauty in a way not usually shown on TV. But I also want to reflect on the way Brazilians are living their lives today. How long can the party go on?

This is an ongoing project.

Last week I left the city to attend a reception at the Albany Institute of History & Art. One of the artists participating was Carolyn Marks Blackwood. When someone asked why did she make her photographs, her art ? The answer spoken very softly was "I need beauty in my life " these very direct, delicate yet  plain spoken words have resonated since they were spoken. For me they have become the idea to get behind, I heard them as a call to arms to defend artists who create for beauty. I feel we need a moment /a movement  away from trying to provoke a time to admit the edgy, dark, commonplace and paranoia is not the only way to define art in the 21st century.

We need to clasp beauty to our hearts and defend it before all of it is destroyed leaving us in despair

Thank you Carolyn Marks Blackwood for giving humanity a rallying cry.

Summer is almost here, I think of being on the road the tedium of the super highway the eeriness and surprise good and bad of the the small back roads, where the rush of the moment create the souvenirs of a lifetime. The quirky  photos of  Gordon Stettinius honors the road and the moment where you turn around to check out something that was to good just to drive by.

No 19. DOCUMENTARY : THE PHOTO CENTER N.W.

7 days left
to submit and participate in
DOCUMENTARY
the 19 Annual Juried Competition
from the PHOTO CENTER NW

Last year I was the juror for the annual Photo Center NW juried competition this year my duties are being performed by
Whitney C. Johnson, Director of Photography,The New Yorker.

I had a wonderful time working with the Photo Center NW, they restored my belief in juried shows the work submitted was intriguing and engaging and of a high quality there was a lot of energy.

The Photo Center NW staff were professional and it made the jurying from a distance easier. Jurying is a form of curating so the final selection takes place at the center. I think the best part of it for me was the community spirit among the photographers nation wide and local who support the Center. I fell in loved with Seattle and the Center. Can't wait to see what Whitney C. Johnson choses.

There is 7 day left to enter please do, one of the best ways to support photography

Photographic Center Northwest is expanding the conversation on documentary photography and providing a space to experience it through Documentary: 19th Annual Photography Exhibition. We are requesting submissions and welcome our esteemed juror, Whitney C. Johnson, Director of Photography at The New Yorker, who will be jurying the exhibition.

We have an extended deadline of MAY 28th and $1,000 in cash prizes!

MARC YANKUS : The Space Between

I started to notice Marc Yankus's new project about a year ago.I am very pleased that it is now being exhibit at Clampart. Some art depend on the creation of a complete and believable world, I think Marc has done that. The relevance of these images touches  a cord with most New Yorkers (most people) as we hear of old touch stones in our cities being destroyed or change during the march into the rest of the 21st Century.A litany Rizzoli, J & R Music World, Saint Vincent's Hospital, Pearl Paint almost every parking lot. Some of the time I am lost trying to figure out where am I. New York is a city of change therefore to be New York it has to keep evolving but never have I seen it happen so fast with so much sorrow.I feel that this new body of work by Marc Yankus is a pavane for cities as they .

Anyway

Back in the 60's when watching one of many musical variety shows a skinny little girl came out stood in the glow of the spotlight and song a dramatic dirge. Her name was Skeeter Davis, the song written
by Nina Gordon"The End Of The World " There is a mood in Marc images that remind me of such muffled sadness and heart break

" Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does " Nina Gordon
